چکیده

Military airspace is increasingly crowded with traditional aircraft competing with new loitering munitions and UAVs. Managing the airspace is therefore more challenging, requiring closer coordination among all the stakeholders. In this paper, we describe the motivation and design of a knowledgebased system that attempts to automate aspects of airspace management, including the detection and resolution of airspace conflicts. We then describe a formative evaluation of the system as compared to human performance of the same task, the evaluation setup, results, and analysis.

Comparing Situation Awareness Measurement Techniques in a Low Fidelity Air Traffic Control Simulation

Changes to the National Airspace System will occur as part of the Next Generation Air Transport System. The consequences of these changes on the situation awareness of pilots and air traffic controllers need to be identified. Before situation awareness metrics can be deployed towards this goal, metrics that can unambiguously capture baseline levels of situation awareness in the current day Nati...

Benefits and Feasibility of the Flexible Airspace Management Concept: A Human-in-the-loop Evaluation of Roles, Procedures, and Tools

A human-in-the-loop simulation was conducted to assess potential user and system benefits of the Flexible Airspace Management (FAM) concept, as well as designing role definitions, procedures, and tools to support the FAM operations in the midterm en route environment. The study evaluated the benefits and feasibility of flexible airspace reconfiguration in response to traffic overload caused by ...

En Route Descent Advisor Concept for Arrival Metering

The En-route Descent Advisor (EDA) is a set of decision support tool (DST) capabilities for managing complex en route traffic subject to metering restrictions. The goal is to enable controller procedures to evolve from today’s emphasis on sector management towards procedures more oriented towards trajectory management. EDA will help controllers transition traffic from a “Free Flight” (minimally...
